The Annual Report on Philanthropy for 2009 from Giving USA and its research partner, the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. This PDF contains highlights from the most comprehensive Annual Report on U.S. Charitable Giving including estimates on sources of giving and amount received by organization type.

Just released June 9, 2010, it shows that that estimated total charitable contributions from American individuals, corporation and foundations falls 3.6 percent in 2009 to $303.75 billion. Despite the overall drop, some types of charities attract more gifts during times of great need; for the third year giving exceeds $300 billion.
